Step-ups are a great move to work the lower body and can be especially effective for the glutes when done properly. For this exercise make sure you can master the body weight step-up first before adding dumbbells. The key is to push hard into the leg that is on the step and use that as the working leg. The opposite leg should remain stiff and not doing the work to get you up. Really emphasize snapping the hips at the top and squeezing the glutes. What makes this move different than a traditional step-up is the slow lowering or eccentric phase of the exercise. Aim to lower towards the floor for a 5 second count really keeping the glute of the working leg contracted.
